The microstructure of this material belongs to the martensitic type. The processing technology is quite demanding. There are relatively few enterprises in China that can handle stainless steel 440C. Therefore, the enterprises that can handle this material are often given the reputation of special stainless steel. The heat treatment process is quite complex, prone to cracking, and has high precision requirements. It is one of the harder stainless steel balls among steel balls: HRC >= 58. Its hardness is close to that of bearing steel balls, but it has stronger rust-proof and anti-corrosion properties compared to the former.

VS. 304/316 Stainless Steel Balls: The hardness of 440C is much higher than that of 304/316, but its corrosion resistance is inferior to theirs. 304/316 steel balls are more commonly used in decorative, light-load situations, or in environments with strong corrosion.
VS. GCr15/52100 bearing steel balls: This is the most common chromium steel bearing steel. The 52100 steel balls typically outperform 440C in pure rolling contact fatigue life (such as standard deep groove ball bearings), and have better toughness, but the biggest drawback is that they are highly prone to rusting. 440C prevails in scenarios where both wear resistance and rust prevention are required.
VS. Ceramic balls (such as silicon nitride): Ceramic balls are lighter, more corrosion-resistant, and non-magnetic, but they are expensive, brittle and not shock-resistant. 440C is a high-performance metal compromise solution.
